Hi Lori
Thank you for your email. It is always great to hear of OWP I made long ago that are still doing the rounds. I loved that purple dots fabric and used some of it for making OWP for my own daughter.
The sewing pattern assumes a zigzag stitching machine, however I can give you some modifications for working with only straight stitching. Several people who had never sewn before have successfully made OneWet Pants for their children using my tutorial. Also, if you have any problems you can always email me or chat using the google chat gadget on my website. You might also like to have a look at my sewing machine, called Betsy. She sews only straight stitching :-)
I often reconstruct old clothing into new items for my daughters – and I am sure that you will be able to find most fabrics around the house to be able to make up some very serviceable OWP for your bub, except for waterproofing fabric.
Look through your cupboards for any old polar fleece – eg dressing gowns, jackets etc. That will be fine for the outer layer. For the inner absorbent layer anything cotton will be suitable – towels, teatowels, pyjamas, even old Tshirts. A couple of layers of old towel makes a good absorbent pad or 4-6 layers of flannelette or Tshirt fabric.
For a water resistant layer in the crotch, you could use an old nylon shower curtain or plastic backed tablecloth – though most of them have PVC in them and I wouldn't recommend PVC for use with children because of the off-gassing etc. Taslon (woven nylon fabric), used in board shorts, is also a moisture resistant layer. If you don't have any of these, you can make the OWP with extra absorbency and no waterproofing.
Hope this gets you started with thinking about what you have around the house that you can use to make the OneWet Pants for your bub.
Best wishes
Marnie
